'No' to National Stadium for Bersih rally

Kita Lawan will continue with its efforts to encourage more people to go to Dataran Merdeka for the Bersih 4 rally.

This is despite inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar urging election reform movement Bersih to use the National Stadium at Bukit Jalil for the rally.

Kita Lawan said ib a statement today the police advice to steer clear from Dataran Merdeka was as though the police intelligence has shown that the rakyat will come in droves on Aug 29 and Aug 30, and the rakyat therefore need to be prevented from doing so.

"We will continue to invite more people to go to Dataran Merdeka for the Bersih 4 rally.

"The rakyat must be brave in coming forward to defend our right to assemble peacefully," said Kita Lawan, a movement made up of politicians, civil society groups, NGOs and youth activists.

Khalid said yesterday that the stadium in Bukit Jalil was a suitable venue for a gathering of 100,000 people.

The police chief said Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok, which are in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, were not suitable because the two venues would be used for the Merdeka Day celebrations.

The Bersih 4 rally is to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu on Aug 29 and 30, and seeks Najib's resignation, among other demands.

Meanwhile, Kita Lawan said its nationwide series of ceramah sessions have drawn encouraging responses thus far.

"We have gone to six states and the response from the local people shows their readiness to join the rally," said the movement, adding that the next focus would be Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

"We will move from district to district, especially to public spots, to give brief explanations and to distribute pamphlets."

Kita Lawan members will be dressed in yellow tonight during their visit to three venues in Selayang - the Country Home Food Court, Kampung Dato Lee Kim Sai night market and Bandar Baru Selayang.
