The wave of resignations of Selangor PAS grassroots leaders have continued with the Shah Alam division leaders announcing the quitting of their posts last night.

Shah Alam division chief Azli Yusof, his deputy Zulkifli Mohd Nani and vice-chief Mohamad Jamil Abd Rahim said they officially announced their resignations during the division's meeting yesterday.

The move includes 18 more Shah Alam PAS working committee members, Azli, Zulkifli and Jamil said in a statement.

“The resignations are not meant to weaken the PAS machinery in Shah Alam but because we want to join efforts to champion Islam through a platform that we have better confidence in,” said the trio.

The statement also said that the division muslimat chief, the muslimat deputy and the vice-head and 11 other muslimat committee members have also resigned.

Yesterday, roughly 400 PAS members and leaders from three PAS divisions in Selangor announced their resignations pending their eventual move to the breakaway initiative Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB).

'Dewan Ulama monitoring efforts to split party'

In an immediate reaction, PAS central committee member and Kuala Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali said the PAS Dewan Ulama is monitoring the efforts to split PAS unity by having members resigning and joining GHB.

Khairuddin ( photo ), who is also PAS Syura Wing committee member, described such actions are not new, for enemies of the party have, in the past, tried various ways internally and externally to weaken PAS.

“History has proven that PAS, which was formed in 1951, has remained steadfast and continues to progress as it is guided by the Quran, sunnah (practice of the prophet), ijma ulama (decisions of withdrawalsin the poast, as in 1982.

“Leaders and members can come and go, but the party based on Islam will continue to flourish. I urge PAS members to be steadfast with the party struggle.

“We are in the PAS struggle to fight for Islamic political power. As long as Islam remains our guidance, members should follow the party,” Khairuddin said in the statement.
