Apology should come from red shirts, not Chinese envoy

YOURSAY | ‘Umno clearly supported the red shirt rally and its racist campaigns.’

Umno Youth wants gov't to act against China ambassador

StrainingGnats, SwallowCamels: “Don’t let an isolated incident such as this affect the good relations between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing,” said Umno Youth international bureau chief Mohamed Hazali Abu Hassan.

The good relations you refer to was first damaged by the racist ranting and racist threats originating from the beyond-rude red shirt rally, attempting to rampage through Petaling Street by force.

Not only were the red shirt protestors disrespectful and rude to Chinese Malaysians, they were also utterly undiplomatic and unbelievably impolite to China and the entire Chinese diaspora because when "orang Cina" or "kaum Cina" is insulted and called "babi", it is impossible to distinguish between the ‘Cina’ in Malaysia or ‘Cina’ in China or the Chinese diaspora.

The ambassador from China was only responding to the ugly intentions of the red shirts, who had tacit support from the PM. Indeed, the apology ought to come from the red shirts.

For Umno to now additionally behave rudely to the ambassador is appallingly bad manners. You are quick to take offence but slow to accord respect.

Negarawan: Umno should also ask Wisma Putra to act against United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Singapore which are investigating PM Najib Razak and 1MDB for "meddling in the country’s internal affairs".

What type of actions does Umno expects Wisma Putra to take? Get these countries to read the FAQs (frequently asked questions) in 1MDB's and Najib's website?

Umno has clearly supported the red shirt rally and its shameful racist campaigns. Umno should admit its mistakes and apologise for them, rather than trying to deny them and demonise the real victims instead.

Justine Gow: I cannot see how a statement for peace and harmony by anyone can be considered as meddling in the country’s internal affairs, especially when there was a threat of riot.

Did Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang say that he supported any political group? Did he say that the present government must be overthrown? Is it wrong for the ambassador to show support and encouragement for peace-loving Malaysians?

Besides, he has the duty and responsibility to act in the interest of the many citizens of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia, who include business people, students and tourists.

Spinnot: The Chinese ambassador did not name any names, he only said that "the Chinese government is against racial discrimination and extremism" and you took it as "meddling in the country’s internal affairs".

Isn't that a self-admission of guilt?

Commentable: Hazali, let's not beat around the bush. Tell us what wrong did Huang do that earned him the accusation of "meddling in the country’s internal affairs"?

You said "sensitive time". Really? What's so sensitive about it? It was Friday, the last working day to a weekend that coincides with the "mooncake festival" celebrated on Sunday.

Next point, is distributing mooncakes in Chinatown wrong? How? Final point, and this takes the cake - is it wrong to say "the Chinese government is against racial discrimination and extremism"? In fact, is it wrong for any government to say it is against racial discrimination and extremism?

By contradicting Huang's statement, you mean to say that the Umno government supports racial discrimination and extremism? Will Najib confirm this in New York on Oct 1 at the United Nations General Assembly?

Anonymous 29051438068738: Perhaps Huang's statement that the Chinese government is against racial discrimination and extremism totally contradicts Umno's governing principle and is therefore seen an attempt to undermine the regime.

Tan Kim Keong: On the contrary, Hazali, it is due to the high level of friendship between the two countries that one can tell the other about what is right and wrong.

So telling a friendly country that state-sponsored racism and extremism is wrong is very appropriate. Vice versa this country could also highlight the same that's happening to the Uighurs, Tibetans and Christians in the other friendly country.

Vijay47: Hazali, I never knew that you were a one-man United Nations Diplomacy Training Corps all by yourself. So now you would have ambassadors and high commissioners hastening to Wisma Putra before making any comment or visit.

Do their statements also need to be vetted and approved by that doyen of international relations, Utusan Malaysia ? What are you actually offended about - that Huang distributed mooncakes and not ketupat?

Another small point in your outburst continues to confuse me. You take umbrage that the Chinese ambassador visited Petaling Street during a "sensitive time". Perhaps you can enlighten us who made things "sensitive" in the first place.

Oh by the way, Hazali, about the two panda gift of yore. We can also reciprocate - you just need to find another orang utan.

TimeWill Tell: Hazali, are you sure you cleared your statement with your top leaders?

Will the "acting" chief appear tomorrow and say something else. Please leave the pandas out of it. If those pandas knew better they would pack their bags and leave.
