Malaysian artistes have often steered clear from politics but that does not mean they are unconcerned about some of the major issues afflicting the nation, including 1MDB.

Rockstar Awie, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, is no exception.

“If possible, I would like this matter to be properly resolved as Malaysia's image is very badly affected right now," he told Malaysiakini when asked about the controversy.

The 47-year-old vocalist noted that such criticism was widespread on social media and this is particularly embarrassing for Malaysians.

"It’s shameful. Do not let it go to a level where people are ashamed to say they are citizens of this country," he said.

Awie agreed with the Conference of Rulers, which on Oct 6 issued a rare statement urging the government to quickly and transparently resolve the 1MDB issue.

The singer also expressed concern over racial sentiments being whipped up amid the 1MDB debacle.

"We can see a lot of racial sentiments being played up to the extent that mutual respect disappeared simply because of politics.

"(People are) scared for their future and what may happen to their children," he said.
