MP: Pointless if only S'wak recognises UEC

Sarawak's move to recognise the Unified Entrance Certification (UEC) for entrance into civil service and Sarawak public universities is pointless if the Public Service Department and Education Ministry do not, DAP's Stampin MP Julian Tan said.

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem last month became the first state to recognise the UEC for entrance into state civil service and University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

However, Tan said this was pointless since the Education Ministry in a reply in Parliament had said UEC was not accepted for entry into public universities or civil service.

"Therefore, the UEC is not acceptable for a position under the Public Service Department since it is not in line with the National Education Policy," the written reply is cited as saying.

Tan said given the federal stand, the Sarawak government must outline how it would implement the recognition of UEC in the state.

He also urged the state to use all MPs from Sarawak to push the issue in Parliament.

"This will then clearly show if they are serious about the issue and use the power given to them by the people of Sarawak, or is it just merely empty talk," he said in a statement.

The UEC is a standardised text for Chinese independent high schools, and is recognised for entrance to tertiary institutions in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore and Canada.

Most of the subjects are taught in the Chinese language, but subjects like accounting, science and mathematics are available in Chinese and English.
