Police force increased by 6,000 to improve public safety
Efforts to improve public safety over a period of almost a year have, among others, seen a significant increase in the number of police personnel, police stations and police assets.
During the period, a total of 6,000 policemen were recruited while new police stations, police headquarters and training centres are being constructed in Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Perlis, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Pahang and Perak, states the Economic Report 2015/2016.
According to the report, which was released by the Finance Ministry today, a total of RM245.3 million was spent on the projects as of July this year.
The police have also been provided with an additional 818 motorcycles, which were procured at a cost of RM15.1 million to improve efficiency in crime prevention.
Apart from this, the government has also implemented various initiatives under the National Key Result Area (NKRA) crime reduction programmes, spending RM25.3 million, as of August this year.
Street crime reduction programmes
The programmes include the installation of closed-circuit television cameras in local authorities; vehicle theft prevention programmes; street crime reduction programmes; Rakan Cop; Triage Counselling; and Feet-on-Street programmes to increase police omnipresence.
The role of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), which was established to support the security forces in preserving law and order, was also enhanced through training and capacity-building programmes.
As of August, eight programmes, including Crisis Management, FirearmsHandling and Leadership Courses, have been conducted, involving RM6.3 million, the report states.
