Airport security pat-downs 'revolting', say travel agents

Airport security should be equipped with scanners instead of having security officers to pat-down travellers, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) says.

Its president Hamzah Rahmat said a pat-down is "revolting" to many people.

This comes after the government told Parliament yesterday that a security pat-down is more effective than using equipment.

"As safety ought to be given top priority, our airport police should be equipped with scanners and not use hands on a person's body.

"A pat-down by a male officer can be revolting and unacceptable by most people," Hamzah said in a statement.

He said travellers would also feel safer if the scanners are equipped with heat detectors, "to stem disease outbreak and epidemics".

The government said yesterday that a pat-down is reasonable because it does not involve touching a person's private parts.

However, Hamzah said pat-downs give an impression that travellers are suspected criminals.

“People everywhere form a lasting impression when they see law enforcement officers stop and frisk suspects on the street.

"Doing the same would make air travellers feel that they are suspects,” he added.

Hamzah said Malaysia aims to attract 24.9 million foreign visitors this year and pat-downs could jeopardise tourism efforts.
