Cancer-plagued Umno has integrity issues, says party no 2
Umno has a cancer that is plaguing it and this cancerous element needs to be removed, said Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“Those who are cancerous within Umno must be rejected,” he said to cries of support at Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur.
While not mentioning Umno president Najib Abdul Razak directly, Muhyiddin said Umno is plagued by “grave issue of lack of integrity”.
“If Umno doesn’t change, the rakyat will change Umno. That is a painful fact.
“I’d rather appeal to Umno to undergo this painful surgery now than face uncertain future in a state of coma and painful death later,” he said.
Umno has a cancer that is plaguing it and this element needs to be removed, said Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“Those who are cancerous within Umno must be rejected,” he said to loud cheers of support at his talk in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur tonight.
While not mentioning Umno president Najib Abdul Razak by name, Muhyiddin said Umno was plagued by the “grave issue of the lack of integrity”.
“If Umno doesn’t change, the rakyat will change Umno. That is a painful fact.
“I’d appeal to Umno to undergo this painful surgery now than face an uncertain future in a state of coma and an eventual painful death,” he said.
He was speaking to about 1,000 people at a gathering on the eve of the Umno AGM during which he is unlikely to get a chance to speak.
For this year, Umno is doing away with the tradition of having the party number two officiate its wings' AGMs tomorrow and is still deciding if Muhyiddin can give a winding-up speech on Saturday for the main assembly.
Two-term limit
Muhyiddin said lack of integrity within the party leadership has also led to the rakyat's suffering.
He said while he does not have the right to tell Najib to step down, many on social media have done so without prompting.
The mere mention of calls for Najib to resign elicited thunderous applause from the audience.
“Why must the rakyat bear the cost of a sheer lack of integrity and greed on the part of the leadership?” he asked.
“If you want to retain the trust of the people, you must get rid of money politics and deep-rooted patronage. (The party must be) led by a person of high moral character.”
As such, he said an Umno president should not hold office for more than two terms to avoid abuse of power.
"There should be a term limit for the Umno presidency. Maybe two terms.
"This way, they will be discouraged from abusing power since they know they won't be in office forever," Muhyiddin said.
The sacked deputy prime minister said he could be face grave consequences from the party for speaking out tonight.
"I may be sacked from the party but I say all this out of my utmost love for the party.
"I will an object of derision in the party much as if I have committed a big sin, but I believe I have done no wrong."
