Umno VP: Was RM2.6b Umno's because president used it?
Umno president Najib Abdul Razak has to prove that the RM2.6 billion donation he received was used for Umno, party vice-president Shafie Apdal says.
"Well, he has to prove it. How many people received the money? If this money was for Umno, why wasn't it discussed in the supreme council on what it would be used for?" Shafie asked.
Umno president Najib Abdul Razak has to prove that the RM2.6 billion donation he received was used for Umno, party vice-president Shafie Apdal says.
"Well, he has to prove it. How many people received the money? If this money was for Umno, why wasn't it discussed in the supreme council on what it would be used for?
"Maybe it is how he used it. He thinks he is the president, so it was for Umno's good," Shafie said in an interview at his Mont Kiara office in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
He said this when asked whether or not accepting the RM2.6 billion from foreign sources was acceptable.
"It's not a question of acceptable, it's a question of accountability," he replied.
Najib has said the RM2.6 billion was a political donation for Umno and corporate social responsibility programmes.
"If you ask me for money, who should I ask for money? I have to make an effort (to find the money), but I won’t do something against the law," the prime minister said at the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual meeting in August.
Issued was raised in cabinet
However, Shafie is confident that the RM2.6 billion never made it into the party's accounts.
"The amount isn't in the (Umno) accounts statement, it wasn't even tabled.
"It didn't go into Umno's accounts. It went into his (Najib's) accounts. So I'm quite sure its not in Umno's accounts," he said.
Shafie, who was axed as rural and regional development minister in July, said he had raised this matter in the cabinet as well.
However, he added, he was only told that the money came from “an Arab donor” and nothing else.
