The Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) erupted with excitement as bodyguards, media and supporters jostled to catch a glimpse of Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin entered the building via the Seri Pacific Hotel entrance, and briskly made his way towards the Tun Dr Ismail Hall where the Umno Youth AGM is taking place.

His supporters shouted 'Hidup Tan Sri '.

Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal arrived at PWTC just moments before.

Malaysiakini is not allowed into the hall and there is no broadcast of the proceedings.

By convention, Muhyiddin should have officiated the Umno wings AGM, but he was barred from doing so this year.

This is Muhyiddin's first appearance at this year's assembly, after he skipped last night's closed-door briefing by Umno president Najib Abdul Razak.

After spending about 30 minutes at the Youth assembly, Muhyiddin then moved on to the Puteri AGM.

Despite the media circling him like piranhas, many delegates who were loitering about barely reacted as Muhyiddin made his way up the two escalators to enter the Tun Hussein Onn Hall.

There were some sporadic shouts of ' Hidup Tan Sri ' but nothing that shook the walls.

Inside the hall, however, it was reported that Muhyiddin and Shafie were greeted with a standing ovation.

'I'm a Muhyiddin supporter'

During his walk from the Tun Dr Ismail Hall to the Tun Hussein Onn hall, several delegates sitting on the floor nearby had their feet trampled upon by stampeding media personnel who scrambled to take videos and photos of the Umno No. 2.

One of those who was stepped on was Nurul Azwa, 25.

"Being stepped on hurts, but that's okay. I'm a Muhyiddin supporter!" the Johorean lass told Malaysiakini in good spirits.

Muhyiddin and Shafie left PWTC at 5pm.

Met by reporters just before his exit, Shafie said their trip went well.

"The response from all the three wings was very good. We will be issuing a statement on this tomorrow," he said.
