UMNO AGM | A two-party system is not on the cards for the country, at least as long as Najib Abdul Razak is the prime minister.

Najib in his policy speech as Umno president today said he will never allow “certain individuals” to suggest that the nation should opt for a two-party system.

“How can this be? How can this be accepted? It’s not because we don’t understand the meaning of democracy, but based on the principles of Umno which upholds the sanctity of Islam and the race, don’t we understand the dangers of such foolish urgings?” he queried.

“Malays and Umno members must be wary of such things. We should not fall into such traps,” he said at the PWTC today.

As usual, Najib did not mention any names, but his remarks today directly refuted recent statements made by his current number one critic, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir last month had said that the best democracy was a two-party system where the opposition is strong enough to take over and offer an alternative to the people.

Najib said the country has only two choices when it came to its political reality.

“And those are whether it is administered by one coalition led by Umno or another coalition led or dominated by the DAP.

“If Umno is rejected, the country will be administered by those who are anti-Islam and who are against the fight for the Malays and the bumiputera," he said.

The premier warned that the future of the younger generation as well as Islam is at stake as rejecting Umno would lead to a leadership that is not made up of Malays and Muslims.

Further hitting out at DAP, Najib said the party had tried to "conquer" other parties in the opposition coalition.

'DAP thrice-divorced'

For example, he said, DAP had announced that it will be contesting against PAS in eight of the latter's seats in the next general election as well as sever its ties with PAS and PKR in Sarawak.

“That’s DAP for you, it has never been loyal to its allies,” Najib said while reminding the delegates how DAP had formed an opposition coalition in 1990, 1999 and 2008 respectively.

“If you compare this to a marriage, they have divorced thrice. If one day they split from Pakatan Harapan, I don’t know how many times already they have divorced.

“It’s so hard for them to be in a coalition and you expect them to administer the country? Think for yourself,” he added.
