Students and staff of a university campus in Petaling Jaya were evacuated following a bomb scare this afternoon, which later turned out to be a hoax.

A police source told Malaysiakini that the bomb disposal had checked the premises and found no explosive devices.

This was also confirmed by Petaling Jaya police chief Mohd Zani Che Din.

"One of the staff called the police, claiming he had received a call from an unknown person who claimed that a Middle-Eastern student had placed a bomb in a toilet during the 10am incident.

"However, further checks in the building showed no such object, a bomb or any explosive item in the building," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times .

Students were allowed to resume classes about 2pm, and the police has recorded the statement of the staff who answered the call from the anonymous caller.

Malaysia has been placed on the highest alert level following the terrorist attack in Jakarta last week.
