Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin that he is a totok (pure) Umno member.

Zahid’s reminder comes as Muhyiddin is set to hold a press conference tomorrow to reveal whether he is quitting Umno or otherwise .

“I want to refer to his previous statements where he said that he is a totok Umno member. [...] as a totok member, surely he will continue to remain with us in Umno," Zahid said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Zahid added that any decision must be made based on the party’s interests.

“(This should be done) rather than making decisions when one is sad or angry,” he explained.

In Muhyiddin's first supreme council meeting after he was sacked as deputy premier last year, Muhyiddin had said that he was a totok Umno member , when asked on his future with Umno.

Zahid added that he agreed with the statement made by Muhyiddin that he was still an Umno member, even though he was suspended from his deputy president’s post last week with immediate effect by the supreme council.

“He is still the Pagoh Umno division chief and his membership is not affected,” Zahid pointed out.

Muhyiddin's suspension came as no surprise as he had been increasingly vocal in his criticism of Najib, after the latter sacked him as deputy prime minister last year.

Meanwhile, Zahid was also asked to comment on Umno supreme council member Nazri Aziz’s claim that there had been a conspiracy to topple Najib from the start.

“I'm not sure of that. That’s just Nazri’s personal opinion,” he said.

On former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who had said that he will return to Umno only if Najib steps down from his positions, Zahid said that he had no comment.

“That’s his statement, you should ask him to clarify it,” he said.
