'DAP Youth blindly citing 2009 Perak crisis to back declaration'
Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yong has hit out at DAP Youth for “blindly” citing the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis to support the validity of the Citizens' Declaration.
“It’s ironic for DAP and others to cite the Perak crisis to support their call to remove Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. This was the same people who criticised the decision of the Federal Court at that time and also the then Sultan of Perak (the late Sultan Azlan Shah) on the ruler's decision to remove Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin,” said Yong, a lawyer, in a press statement today.
DAP Youth chief Wong Kah Woh had highlighted the 2009 Perak coup in response to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's criticism of the Citizens' Declaration.
Zahid had stated that any change in leadership must go through the democratic process.
"One needs to understand the facts and laws of that (Perak constitutional crisis) case instead of making references to it blindly,” said Yong.
Yong ( pix above ) also said that unless those behind the declaration sought an audience with the Agong to justify their opinion that Najib has lost the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, and request for the dissolution of Parliament; “it is not right” to quote the Perak constitutional crisis case to support their views.
In the 2009 Perak crisis, three Pakatan Rakyat representatives in the state legislative assembly had declared that they no longer supported Pakatan, and instead threw their support behind BN.
Nizar, the then Perak menteri besar, had an audience with Sultan Azlan Shah and asked for the dissolution of the state assembly.
However, the late sultan had issued a decree for Nizar and his executive council to tender their resignations, as Nizar was believed to no longer command the confidence of the majority in the state assembly.
