Switzerland's Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) said it is in contact with Malaysia over its request for mutual legal assistance (MLA) in the criminal proceeding concerning 1MDB.

"The Malaysian Attorney-General’s Chambers has acknowledged receipt of the (MLA) request and the OAG stands in contact with the AG's Chambers for its execution," OAG's communication specialist Anthony Brovarone told Malaysiakini .

The OAG was asked to respond to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri's statement to Parliament on Tuesday claiming that the Swiss government had not responded to the Malaysian AG's Chambers.

She said the AG's Chambers had sought for an initial response from the OAG on Feb 4, the very day the OAG requested for MLA in the 1MDB case but had not heard from them since.

Brovarone said the OAG cannot provide further information on the matter but said it was satisfied with Malaysia's reaction.

"The OAG confirms with satisfaction the transmission of the mutual legal assistance request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia in the context of the OAG’s criminal proceedings concerning 1MDB.

"The request, after transmission through the competent Federal Office of Justice (FOJ), has been delivered on Feb 4 through diplomatic channels as it is standard procedure.

"The OAG took note with satisfaction of the reaction of its Malaysian counterpart and of its commitment to fully support Switzerland’s request for mutual assistance," he said.

The Swiss OAG suspects former Malaysian officials and “persons unknown” are involved in the misappropriation of US$4 billion from 1MDB.

However, it has said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is not a suspect in its probe.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal.
