'DAP sacrificed Batu Kitang to keep the peace with PKR'

S'WAK POLLS The DAP has sacrificed the Bukit Kitang seat to make their peace with PKR, over the tussle for seat allocations for the upcoming Sarawak state elections, said party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

The Batu Kitang seat had been carved out from the DAP-held seats of Batu Kawah and Kota Sentosa and was originally earmarked for Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen, reminded Lim.

That seat, he added, will now be contested by PKR's Voon Shiak Ni.

"DAP will give full support to the female candidate Voon Shiak Ni as announced by PKR deputy president and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

"DAP hopes that both PKR and DAP can work together and help each other to ensure mutual victories and to fulfill the historic mission of denying BN its two-thirds majority in the Sarawak state assembly," Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said in a statement today.

DAP will also be contesting an "historic" 30 seats in the upcoming Sarawak state elections, which will see it contest in more non-Chinese than Chinese-majority seats, said Lim.

He also strongly condemned Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem for barring Pakatan Harapan leaders from entering the state, calling it a "blatant abuse of power".

So far, more than 40 opposition lawmakers, activists and academicians have been banned from entering the state, including PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli, DAP lawmakers Tony Pua and Anthony Loke as well as Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

The state PKR and the local DAP were at odds earlier over seat allocations.

This was after state PKR broke ranks and decided not to follow the instructions on seat allocations by the national Pakatan Harapan leadership and forged ahead with its own candidate list.

The last few days have seen PKR and DAP national leaders going down to the ground to mend fences.

Lim is there to represent central DAP while PKR deputy president Azmin Ali came on PKR central leadership's behalf, after being told upon entry that he is now on the immigration watchlist and can be expelled at any time.

Lim's announcement seems to be a gesture to Azmin's earlier urging for the two long-time allies to resolve the matter.
