Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said that the wing's election machinery will not be daunted, even if former premier Mahathir Mohamad were to contest in one of the seats in the coming Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.

"We do not care who will contest, and they can field any individual, even Mahathir for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat, (for example).

"The Umno Youth machinery will focus to ensure a BN win in both parliamentary seats," national news agency Bernama reported him as saying.

Speaking to reporters after opening the Penang-level FitMalaysia programme in Balik Pulau today, Khairy who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said that he is confident that the wing can help sway the youth vote in BN's favour.

The Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar seats by-elections will be held concurrently on Jun 18, with nominations set for Jun 5.

The two seats fell vacant after the death of Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Noriah Kasnon who was Sungai Besar MP, and Kuala Kangsar parliamentarian Wan Mohammad Khair-il Wan Ahmad in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5.
