If DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang wants PAS to concentrate only on seats in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, then his party should only contest in Penang, says a PAS vice president.

He was responding to Lim's suggestion yesterday that PAS only concentrates on seats in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis for the coming general election.

“(So) PAS should not be restricted to contest in certain states only. If that is the case, then people can say that you (DAP) are only entitled to contest in Penang.

“That suggestion is illogical. It’s up to PAS where it wants to contest. PAS knows its strength in the places it contests in,” PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad told Malaysiakini today.

Even if it is to maximise victories for the opposition, Idris, the MP for Bukit Gantang in Perak, stressed that there should be status quo – PAS should be allowed to contest in areas it had previously contested in.

Citing the recently concluded by-elections in the parliamentary constituencies of Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, Idris said there would not have been an issue in the first place if PAS was up in straight fights against the Barisan Nasional.

Lim in his statement released yesterday said that the results of the two by-elections had sparked renewed discussions to avoid three-cornered fights in the next general election.

“Maybe it is an opportune time to revisit a proposal for PAS to concentrate on Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis while Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) focuses on all the other states, subject to adjustments to the arrangement by the two political parties,” Lim had said.

Apart from Idris, who voiced his disagreement with Lim’s suggestion, fellow PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah had stated that it was not possible for PAS to sit at the same table and cooperate with DAP and Amanah in Pakatan Harapan.

On this, Mohd Amar, who is Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar was responding to PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali’s suggestion that PAS returns to Pakatan Harapan to face BN in the 14th general election.

Mohd Amar said the party's stand, as of now, was not to have any cooperation with PKR and Amanah as it was focusing on empowering the third opposition block with Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia.
