Pagoh Umno division vice-chief Shahruddin Md Salleh has resigned from his post.

Confirming this, he said he remains an Umno member and Jorak assemblyperson.

"I love Umno. Umno has problems (and) the Umno supreme council do not want to admit that they are the number one problem," he told Malaysiakini.

His resignation as Pagoh Umno vice-chief is of immediate effect.

Pagoh Umno was previously headed by former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who was sacked from the party on June 24.

Asked if he fears the same fate would befall him, he said: "What can I say? They even kicked Muhyiddin out."

The resignation comes as suspended Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal said he will quit the party.

The Semporna MP was last year sacked from cabinet along with Muhyiddin after criticising the management of 1MDB.

The Semporna vice-chief Jaujan Sambakong last week announced his resignation from Umno along with about 300 division members.

The Sulabayan assemblyperson said it will be up to the state assembly speaker to determine if he is an independent elected representative.

Muhyiddin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir was sacked from the party last month.
