Several voters today lodged complaints with the Election Commission (EC) claiming that they were transferred across state and parliamentary constituencies without their knowledge.

Spokesperson of the 12 voters, Romeyzee Zainuddin, said he had voted in the Batang Kali state seat for the past three general elections but was unknowingly transferred to Kuala Kubu Baru.

He said that he only came to know about the transfer after seeing polls watchdog Bersih’s statement on July 1 on the matter.

“I was shocked to find out how I was suddenly transferred.

“We ask that the EC move us back to our original state seat," Romeyzee told reporters outside the EC's headquarters in Putrajaya.

Bersih, on July 1, presented evidence of what it claimed to be an illegal shift of thousands of voters from their state or parliamentary constituencies.

The data showed 118,774 voters purportedly moved to different state constituencies, with 40,000 voters moved to different parliamentary constituencies.

This comes in the wake of the EC’s recent locality correction exercise.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah today, however, said that although the EC had promised to look into the issue, it had written back to say that it needed more time.

“However, Bersih has given the EC three weeks to analyse the data and we are surprised that the EC needed more time when they are the primary source for the data."

Maria stressed that the changes made by the EC were unconstitutional as they cause the number of voters and boundaries of state and parliamentary constituencies to change.

Such changes, she added, could only be done via a public re-delineation exercise.

Therefore, Bersih urged that the EC explain the reasons for the correction of each locality as well as to reinstate voters who were moved across state and parliamentary constituencies.
