Selangor BN need not wait for amendments to the Standing Orders to appoint an opposition leader in the state legislative assembly, said Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San.

"The opposition need not come up with excuses to reject this position.

"There is no need. This is a recognised position that comes with a state allowance. They even get office facilities, to ensure the opposition leader can operate," he told reporters at the legislative assembly building lobby in Shah Alam today.

Lau was commenting on Selangor state assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh's remarks yesterday that amendments will be made to the Standing Orders to fix a time for the opposition leader to speak in the House.

Yeoh, who chairs the Standing Orders committee, said the opposition leader can at present only speak at the Speaker's discretion.

The amendment will allow the opposition leader time to speak on topics related to the state administration.

Before this, Sulaiman Razak (BN-Permatang) claimed the post was not a formal position, so there was no need for a fixed time for the opposition leader's speech.

The state opposition leader’s post was vacated by BN’s Sungai Burong assemblyperson Mohd Shamsudin Lias in December 2014, after he rejected the offer to head the Selangor Public Accounts Committee.
