PKR Youth today throws support behind the student-organised 'Tangkap Malaysian Official 1' on Aug 27.

The wing's vice-president Tan Kar Hing also committed to mobilising its members and youths from across Malaysia to attend the rally in Kuala Lumpur.

'Malaysian Official 1' (MO1) is the term used by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in court filings, to refer to an unnamed senior high-ranking Malaysian government official who received US$731 million of funds which originated from 1MDB.

"The 1MDB issue is not only the biggest corruption scandal in Malaysian history. It also involves a civil suit filing by the US DOJ to seize assets linked to misappropriated 1MDB funds.

"The Malaysian government has lost credibility and is now the world's laughing stock," he said in a statement.

He said the people have no choice but take to the streets as institutions have been "manipulated".

"The country's and the future generation will have no future if people continue to keep quiet," the Simpang Pulai assemblyperson said.

Tan also urged civil society to support the rally and the Bersih 5 rally on the same matter announced yesterday.

Details of the Bersih 5 rally have yet to be ironed out, but the Bersih 4 rally which, among others, called for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation attracted more than 100,000 people.

'Tangkap MO1' rally spokesperson Anis Syariah Mohd Yusuf said their campaign aimed to put pressure on local authorities to arrest and charge the 'Malaysian Official 1'.

"Leading up to the peaceful assembly, students and youths will be carrying out briefing sessions for other students and those residing outside of the Klang Valley.

"Now is the time for action. We would also like to urge all youths to gather in solidarity in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 27. This is the time for us to celebrate the true meaning of independence," said Anis, who also represents Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia.
