Come Aug 10, Anwar Ibrahim will turn 69. To mark the birthday of the imprisoned former opposition leader, 69 video clips will be played outside the Sungai Buloh Prison in the evening.

The greeting 'Anwar Ibrahim, Happy Birthday!', will be some of the clips that will be shown.

In a Facebook post, the Free Anwar campaigners have invited people to record short clips – no longer than five seconds – and send the clips to them.

The clips will then be edited and made into a video, which will be played outside the prison.

According to Adrian Lim Chee En, a Free Anwar campaign secretariat member, more than 30 clips have been received since the event started last week, and some were made by overseas Malaysians.

"These Malaysians are from the United States, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, and UK. They sent greetings like 'this is XX from the UK, who would like to wish Anwar a happy birthday'. The greetings also come in different languages,” said Lim.

"Some people have inserted personal messages, like they want to see him freed or they hope he will be the prime minister instead of Najib (Abdul Razak)," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

The deadline for submission of the videos is Aug 7.

Besides a compilation of birthday wishes, some other activities will also be held, such as an exhibition of old photographs, poem recitation, speeches as well as singing.

"Semambu assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung will sing a Cantonese song. There will also be on display photographs of people who had taken pictures with Anwar," he added.

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after he was convicted of sodomy – his second sodomy charge in a decade – in a trial denounced by human rights defenders.
