Filmmaker Amir Muhammad fell victim to online identity theft after a Facebook account used his photograph and posted a critical comment against the #TangkapMO1 rally.

The Facebook account with the name "Bro Alexander" used the same profile picture as Amir's Twitter account.

Amir, who took the incident in stride, expressed dismay at his impostor's spelling errors.

"I am most disappointed that I am not represented as someone who can at least spell properly," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Amir added that he was alerted about the identity theft by a friend on Twitter.

Bro Alexander had left a comment on a story titled: "Himpunan Tangkap MO1 akan diteruskan di Dataran" (TangkapMO1 rally to proceed at Dataran Merdeka) on Malaysiakini's Bahasa Malaysia section.

It read: "Nama pun perhimpunan HARAM..tapi degil jgk nak buat..apa je korang dpt dgn berdemo mcmtu?? ingat dgn berdemo boleh ke tangkap MO1 tu?? hampehhh...buang masa, buang karan..dok rumah lagi bagus".

(It's already an illegal rally, but they are still stubborn about organising it. What do you get out of demonstrating like that? Do you think you can arrest MO1 by demonstrating? What a waste of time, better to stay home).

Twitter user @farhanazahan who spotted the comment subsequently posted it on the micro-blogging site and alerted Amir.

He jokingly suggested that "Bro Alexander" was Amir's pen name and was being a "macai" (lackey).

Amir then responded, expressing surprise at the episode.

MO1 refers to Malaysian Official 1 who was referred to in the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) 136-page filing to seize US$1 billion in assets purportedly acquired using money stolen from 1MDB.

The DOJ claimed more than US$3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB and at least US$731 million went into the personal bank accounts of "Malaysian Official 1".

The rally slated for Aug 27 is calling for action against "Malaysian Official 1".

Last month, the photograph of Syuhada Baharudin, who had passed away, was also used by a Facebook account under the name "Zunaidah Zain".

The Facebook account was used to post the hashtag #RespectMyPM #BelieveinPM.

Facebook user Rita Abdul Rahim later urged that the picture be removed, stating: "The picture you are using as your profile picture is of my friend, Syuhada Baharudin. She returned to her maker three years ago".

Prior to that, national debater Mifzal Mohammed's picture was also used on social media accounts which then attacked fellow debater Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.

"Like seriously, how stupid can they get? Do they really think I don't know my debate colleagues?" Syed Saddiq said.
