Cops nab two for Facebook posting over Haron Din's death

Two netizens have been arrested for allegedly insulting Islam through their Facebook posting on the death of PAS spiritual leader Haron Din, said inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar.

The duo were arrested in Perak and Selangor respectively, said the top cop via Twitter today.

"Well done, Commercial Crime Investigation Department arrested two, one in Ipoh and Shah Alam for their FB post for insulting Islam..." he tweeted today.

Haron, 76, passed away at Stanford University Hospital in San Francisco, from heart complications on Sept 16.

At a press conference after attending the police monthly assembly at Bukit Aman this morning, Khalid said the duo's postings were made following a similar remark by Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi.

"Following Jeff Ooi's tweet, several others were found to have made similar remarks (on social media) that have hurt the feelings of Muslims.

"So two of them have been arrested..." he said, adding that the individuals appear to be followers of politicians who are known to have made similarly controversial postings.

"When they see their 'boss' making such comments, then they will also do the same," said Khalid.

It is understood that police are also in the process of arresting another individual from Bandar Utama.

The three male suspects, aged between 50 and 62, would be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"It is okay. When we charge them then you will know (their identity)," said Khalid when asked for further details.

Ooi had written "Adios Harun Din. May there be peace" when re-tweeting another tweet about the PAS spiritual advisor's passing last Friday.

But the DAP lawmaker later deleted the tweet after hit by brickbats from all quarters.
