'Haron Din tweet' arrest; Anwar, Dr M unite; EC defends redelineation

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Ex-journo arrested over tweet on Haron Din

Former journalist Sidek Kamiso was arrested in the wee hours of Monday over a tweet he made on PAS spiritual leader Haron Din who died on Sept 16.

His wife said plainclothes police jumped over their gates, seized Sidek's telephone and computer, and arrested him without a warrant.

The Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court, however, denied a police request for a remand.

Meanwhile, police tell DAP's Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi to surrender for investigation, after Ooi retweeted Sidek's tweet, with the remark 'Adios, let there be peace'.

Anwar, Dr M issue joint statement against NSC Act

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and once arch-enemy Dr Mahathir Mohamad issued a joint statement against the National Security Council (NSC) Act, which critics say could lead to dictatorship.

Anwar, however, sidestepped the question when asked if he has forgiven Mahathir for sacking him, and accusing him of sodomy and corruption.

EC denies redelineation favours any party

The Election Commission (EC) denies claims that the redelineation proposal is an attempt at gerrymandering to favour BN, despite boundary changes effectively diminishing the opposition's winning majority in several seats.

EC chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah said those opposing it can raise objections, while MPs can debate it in Parliament before the proposal is passed.

The Pakatan Harapan secretariat proposes that Selangor and Penang object to the redelineation, while PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli said he will submit a Private Member's Bill to remove redelineation powers from the EC.

Separately, Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali rejected DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang's suggestion for snap polls in the state, with Lim arguing that the redelineation is to return Selangor to BN.

Other Kinibites

Rosmah Mansor will not be receiving the 'Lead by Example' Award from the Antiquities Coalition after the Permata programme was removed from the list of honourees.

Award organisers also clarified that the award is not given by Unesco, as earlier reported.

Responding to a civil suit by Anwar, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said his 2008 remark that Anwar 'main belakang' was taken out of context and did not have sexual connotations.

Looking ahead

DAP's Ooi will present himself to police at the Daerah Timor Laut police district headquarters over his tweet on the recently deceased PAS leader.

Electoral watchdog Bersih will hold a press conference to address the redelineation proposal, while DAP's Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming and Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah will launch a campaign against the boundary changes affecting their constituencies.
