Rafidah Aziz: Instead of street protests, set up NCC2

Former Umno minister Rafidah Aziz said street protests, harsh words and show of "brute strength" will do no good in resolving problems.

"We have come a very long way from the era of the primates' social order," she said in a Facebook posting today, without mentioning any rally.

Instead, she called for the "united patriotic Malaysians" to set up an inclusive and apolitical National Consultative Council 2 (NCC2), as proposed by prominent banker Nazir Razak last week.

"It's time to put (our) heads together... to discuss, consult, debate, advise, provide positive inputs, devise ways and means to heal what fractured.

"We need to have the NCC2 set up and to start working soonest," Rafidah said.

She believed that NCC2 will be a way to move the country forward, as a globally competitive and respected nation.

Nazir had repeatedly proposed the best minds and leaders across society to come together for national recalibration.

The first NCC was headed by Nazir’s father, second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein in the aftermath of the 1969 race riots, to create harmony and unity among the various races in Malaysia.

In her posting, Rafidah raised concern on the impact of the development of events against social stability, economic resilience and competitiveness.

"There seem to be an erosion of good governance in all spheres... politics, social and economic," she said.

Rafidah also acknowledged a lack of effective management of the various actions among members of society and the heavy-handed rules which allowed things to fester.

"We have not learnt from the tragedy of May 13, 1969 and from the various economic crisis we had faced in the past.

"It is time for there to be a comprehensive, serious and honest evaluation into where we really are, as multi-racial and multi-faith people, as Malaysians," she said.
