After four Universiti Malaya students were disciplined by the university management for taking party in a ‘Tangkap MO1’ rally in August, a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) student now faces action for this.

Student Unity Front (SUF) president Asheeq Ali was summoned by the UKM management and he will be facing disciplinary action.

The university management is scheduling a date, possibly in mid-November, for an inquiry against Asheeq for his involvement in the rally, SUF secretary-general Chong Kar Yan said today.

"Asheeq Ali is to be the first student in UKM to face disciplinary action. We will start an appeal drive and ask the UKM authority to drop it (the charge).

"We will also seek legal aid to see if can stop the management from taking action against him,” Chong told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

According to a notice sighted by Malaysiakini, Asheeq went against two university rules, which are hurting the university's reputation and interest inside or outside campus, and posing a challenge to written rules.

Centre for a Better Tomorrow (Cenbet) council member Woon King Chai, who was previously dubbed as ‘UKM 4’ and had similarly been hauled up by UKM under the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA) in 2010, called on UKM to cancel the disciplinary proceedings immediately.

Taking disciplinary action against Asheeq goes against the spirit of the 2012 amendments to the University and University Colleges Act, Woon said.

"We have spoken to Asheeq about his plight and we understand this is the third time he has been charged under similar internal university rules that are simply contrary to the standards that we expect of tertiary education institutions in this country.

"Cenbet will do whatever is within our means to assist him and set things right," he said in a statement.

The Tangkap MO1 rally by university students was held on Aug 27, and its spokesperson Anis Syafiqah and three other UM students received show-cause letters soon after the rally.
