It was Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak himself who told the people to await the auditor-general's report for answers on 1MDB, but after it was completed, those who revealed the report ended up being jailed, noted a PAS MP.

"When the audit report was completed and was ready for public consumption, Najib, unfortunately, classified the document as secret under the Official Secrets Act.

"The question is, what was Najib's motive in instructing an audit if it is to be kept secret?

"What is the point of auditing 1MDB if it cannot be made known to the Malaysian people," Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar said in a statement yesterday.

Mahfuz was referring to the KL Sessions Court's decision on Monday to sentence Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli to 18 months in jail for revealing part of the auditor-general's report on 1MDB.

"Rafizi was jailed simply for having the courage to expose misappropriation of funds in the government but those in the 1MDB wrongdoing, involving the people's money such as (the prime minister's stepson) Riza Aziz and (Penang billionaire) Jho Low are roaming free," said Mahfuz.

Mahfuz said it was better not to have an audit to begin with if the government intended to keep it secret.

He added that if Najib was innocent of the 1MDB scandal, there was no need for him to keep it secret.

"Why fear revealing it to the public?

"I challenge the prime minister to declassify the auditor-general's report on 1MDB," he said.
