Jais told to retract order to attend ‘Anwar Thinking’ seminar

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has instructed the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to rescind its order to religious teachers in the state to attend the seminar on ‘The Thinking of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’ scheduled to be held in Shah Alam on Monday.

Mais chairperson Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said in a statement issued yesterday that the Jais officer who issued the order did so on his own accord, without referring to his higher-ups.

He also reminded the state government and Selangor PKR leaders not to involve Jais in political matters.

However, Jais director Haris Kasim said in a separate statement that the department received an order from the state government to invite the religious teachers to attend the seminar, but that it was not mandatory for them to do so.

Former deputy prime minister and former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is currently serving a a five-year prison sentence after being convicted of sodomy.
