An architecure diploma student from Universiti Teknologi Mara Seri Iskandar campus has been summoned for a disciplinary hearing for his alleged involvement in the "Tangkap MO1" roadshow and the Bersih 5 rally.

The student, Ahmad Arifin Shakimin, uploaded a copy of the official letter dated Jan 3 on his Facebook account with the message "surat cinta di awal 2017" (A 'love letter' at the start of 2017).

When contacted, Ahmad Arifin said the hearing would be held on Jan 17 and he has been slapped with two charges under the Educational Institutions (Discipline) Act 1976.

"It is strange because I did not receive any show-cause letter before this letter summoning me for a disciplinary hearing.

"But these strange things seem to be a common practice by UiTM's administration," said Ahmad Arifin (photo), who confirmed that he would be attending the hearing.

He said the first charge was for his presence during the "Tangkap MO1" roadshow outside the UiTM Seri Iskandar campus in Perak on Aug 20 last year.

The roadshow, held as a precursor to the Aug 27 "Tangkap MO1" rally in Kuala Lumpur, was deemed as an illegal assembly by UiTM's administration, he said.

The second charge is for his participation in the Bersih 5 rally in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 19 last year.

Could even be expelled

"If found guilty, I could be fined, suspended or expelled," said Ahmad Arifin, who added that he is prepared for the worst outcome.

He said the actions against him and student activists from other public universities were in contradiction with Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of speech, assembly and expression.

Universiti Malaya student Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof and two other student activists have been suspended for a semester for their involvement in the "Tangkap MO1" rally.

The other two are Mohd Luqman Hakim Fazli and Mohamad Luqman Nul Haqim Zul Razali, while another student activist, Suhail Wan Azhar, was fined RM400.

All four of them filed an originating summons in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 27, seeking an order that the tertiary institution's disciplinary action against them is unconstitutional.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia student Asheeq Ali Sethivi has similarly mounted a legal challenge against his one semester suspension for involvement in the rally which called for actions against the individual identified as "Malaysian Official One" in the United States Department of Justice's (DOJ) report on 1MDB.

MO1 is a code name used in the DOJ's civil forfeiture suit and critics insisted it could only refer to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, despite him having been cleared of any wrongdoing by attorney-general Apandi Ali.
