A group of young activists has pledged to tour Umno’s stronghold seats to spread the message of the struggle of jailed PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim.

This is part of the FreeAnwar campaign organised by #BebasAnwar group to remind the public of Anwar’s struggle in politics.

“We will focus on rural hinterland. Why? Because these are Umno’s stronghold areas,” activist Adrian Lim told the media after the launching of the campaign’s theme, dubbed ‘Anwar's 10 years as political prisoner’ at his house in Segambut last night.

“(During the tour), we will organise ceramah as usual. We will prepare leaflets and booklets that (comprise the information) of economic status, our debts as well as the comparison between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s and Anwar’s era,” he added.

“Those who support Umno, take this opportunity to repent. It is not too late,” he said.

He, however, declined to reveal the details of the tour events, slated to be held in peninsular Malaysia after Feb 10, for security reasons.

“We don’t want people (like Red Shirts leader) Jamal Md Yunos to wait for us. (We don’t want) to get paint splashed (on us) and get beaten up,” he said.

Besides this, he said the group planned to hold a solidarity event for Anwar in February and another main event on the day Anwar’s three imprisonments, add up to 10 years.

Anwar, who is serving a five-year sentence over his second sodomy charge, had been detained under the Internal Security Act from 1974 to 1976 and was jailed from 1998 to 2004 after being convicted of sodomy and corruption charges.

Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; PKR vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua; political cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar; DAP Youth leader Dyana Sofia Mohd Daud and Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tuck were also present.

Meanwhile, Nurul Izzah, who spoke on behalf of Anwar’s family, said the history involving the struggle of reformation should not be forgotten.

“We are faced with media that attempted to delete every moment of history sketched on the cause of reformation,” she said.

“This is not about Anwar, but he crystallised the demand for us to reform the system so that Najib would be the final dictator to ever, ever rule Malaysia,” she added.

“Please spread the words and replay the message, we don’t want people like Rafizi Ramli, Tian, Lim Guan Eng and many more to be put in jail because they dare to criticise a dictator and cruel leader,” she said.
