Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed the grouses of prison staff to the government over the rising cost of living.

Speaking to supporters on the sidelines of his court appearance in Kuala Lumpur today, Anwar said he has heard numerous complaints on this issue from prison staff.

"The government should look into forming a special committee to study the problem, even prison staff are complaining," he said.

Yesterday, Putrajaya again raised petrol and diesel prices. Since September last year, the price of RON95 petrol has gone up by 60 sen per litre.

This, coupled with a decline in the value of the ringgit, has resulted in rising prices.

Yesterday, opposition lawmakers such as Petaling Utara MP Tony Pua and Permatang Pauh MP Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged Putrajaya to explain why fuel prices had gone up although global crude oil prices were falling.

Three months ago, Anwar, who was formerly the finance minister and deputy prime minister, had urged Putrajaya to tackle the country's deficit problems and cost of living issues.

Without resolving such issues, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's TN50 (National Transformation 2050) plan could not be achieved, said Anwar.

"If his government does not correct the abuse of power and rectify good governance, the country would head nowhere," said Anwar, at the time.
