Grab has fixed a glitch in their application that had earlier allowed drivers to collect a flat-rate of only RM110 for rides from Genting to anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia.

This followed complaints by drivers at a press conference that small traders organisation Ikhlas held earlier this week.

Malaysiakini's checks found that the glitch has been fixed and the RM110 flat rate does not apply for rides from Genting to destinations outside of the Klang Valley.

However, it is not clear if Grab would be compensating drivers for the loss of income over the system glitch.

"We want to thank our drivers for pointing out the issue (with the) RM110 fare from Genting to anywhere in (Peninsular) Malaysia.

"It was sincerely a bug we didn't realise. Thanks to them (the drivers), we have fixed the issue," Grab Malaysia head Sean Goh said in a statement to Malaysiakini.

When contacted, several Grab drivers who attended the Ikhlas press conference expressed gratitude over the matter.

"Now at least some (Grab) drivers won't be too choosy about picking passengers from Genting as the fares are more realistic. Kudos to Grab for fixing the issue," Grab driver Mohd Gha Zaidi said.

Before the bug was fixed, rides from Genting to Johor Bahru, for example, cost RM110, excluding toll.

Now, it costs RM577.

Another Grab driver, who only wanted to be known as Shah, hopes Grab will be as responsive over their complaints on the rejection penalty.

Drivers are fined RM1 every time they reject a ride request, which some drivers say severely impacts their incomes.

"God willing, Grab will also fix the reject-accept issue as soon as possible, like they fixed the bug in the app," Shah said.

Also at the press conference, Ikhlas president Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah alleged that Grab's agenda was to "kill" the conventional taxi industry by first imposing low fare, and then increasing it when taxi services are wiped out.
