Judges should be objective when hearing cases in order to ensure that only justice is dispensed, said deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the new sessions court complex in Gua Musang, Kelantan yesterday, Adnan said that judges must be impartial when discharging their duties.

"Although a judge may have his personal opinion on certain pieces of legislation, he cannot let his emotions and personal opinion on certain individuals or political ideologies get in the way when arriving his judgment," said Adnan, who added that the tendency of injecting personal values in a court judgments was beginning to manifest itself of late.

"This will lead to chaos if unchecked. However, this does not mean that a judge cannot express his personal opinion on legislative-related matters, if the purpose of doing so is to strengthen the overall legislative framework of the country.

"What is of paramount importance here is that they should go through the proper channels, and not mix everything up in a way which is not really relevant to the case at hand," said Adnan.

He asserted that everyone should ensure that the present system where "Parliament formulates legislation, while the Judiciary is responsible for ensuring that it is adhered to" is protected.

The deputy minister represented Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Dr Rais Yatim, at the function which was officiated by the Sultan of Kelantan.
