It is up to PAS whether or not they want to stay as administrative members of the Selangor government, said former menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

"That is up to PAS. Administration and politics should be separate," Khalid told reporters on the sidelines of the PAS muktamar in Alor Setar, Kedah.

He said this when asked to comment on calls for the four PAS executive councillors in Selangor to resign from their posts, following motions from PAS to cut ties with PKR, which leads the state government.

Khalid said the PAS exco members were elected as assemblypersons on a promise to serve the people, which they must fulfill.

The independent Port Klang assemblyperson, however, said a situation which disrupts the state government must be avoided.

"But Selangor has had a strong administration for a long time, so it shouldn't be too hard to administer," he said.

Khalid had in 2014, sacked all his state executive councillors, except for those from PAS, following a political tussle which resulted in him being sacked from PKR.

The presence of PAS excos allowed Khalid to continue governing the state until he resigned in August that year and was replaced by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

PAS has said that PKR would not govern Selangor without its support, as it won 15 state seats in the 13th general elections, while PKR only won 13.

Meanwhile PKR vice president Shaharuddin Badaruddin - who was present at the muktamar as a guest of honour - said cooperation with PAS can still occur even if the latter decides to sever ties.

"In politics, it can be anything. If there is no tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation), there can be an understanding (to work together) or an electoral pact," Shaharuddin said.

However, he said it would be best if the tahaluf siyasi was maintained.

The PKR political bureau has yet to discuss the matter he said.

On PAS' end, it is up to the syura council to decide whether ties with PKR should be maintained or cut.
