RCI formed for 1980s forex scandal

The cabinet yesterday approved the formation of a royal commision of inquiry into the 1980s foreign exchange scandal, after the special task force formed to probe it found elements of cover-up and attempts to mislead Parliament and cabinet, the Prime Minister's Office said.

It also said that the special task force found that the losses were greater than what was at the time reported to Parliament and cabinet, which was then led by now opposition leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Rahman Dahlan vs DOJ

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) said details in its filing in the 1MDB-linked civil forfeiture case is to establish facts to stand in trial, and not to make insinuations. It said its probe is ongoing.

However, Minister in Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan questioned why the DOJ is publishing its findings before its probe is complete, and if it is help "desperate quarters" who need a "leg up" in the upcoming general election.

Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee meanwhile claimed prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor is being made a "sacrificial lamb" in the DOJ scandal, after she is linked to the case in relation to jewellery allegedly bought for the wife of one "Malaysian Official 1" using funds purportedly stolen from 1MDB.

In related matter, DAP lawmaker Tony Pua dared Abdul Rahman to disprove DOJ's claim that 22 carat pink diamond worth more than US$20 million was bought for "the wife of MO1" by 1MDB-linked individual Jho Low.

Meanwhile, DAP assemblyperson Lau Weng San lodged a report with the National Registration Department over Low's dual nationality after the DOJ said Low also holds a passport from West Indies island nation St Kitts & Nevis.

Court orders reply on 'Shafee's RM9.5m'

The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered the government to reply to Anwar Ibrahim's application to set aside his Sodomy II conviction following the allegation that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak paid RM9.5 million to the case's prosecutor Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

Allegations of the RM9.5 million payment surfaced on whistleblower website Sarawak Report, which cited documents from Malaysian investigators.
