Former Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) chairperson Mohd Isa Abdul Samad and his wife Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid were grilled by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for more than three hours today, as part of the commission's investigation into alleged graft in FGV.
The couple had earlier arrived at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya around 9.40am.
Speaking to reporters after the questioning concluded, Mohd Isa explained that his wife's presence was "normal".
"It is normal (for my wife) to be called (for questioning). When there are allegations and names mentioned, of course, we would be summoned," he said.
Asked whether he was guilty in the matter, Mohd Isa said he would not know whether he was guilty or otherwise.
"How would I know whether I am guilty or not? I have given my statement as part of the investigation.
"I don't want to make any assumptions in this matter. This is a decision to be made by the MACC."
The MACC in a statement issued after questioning the couple today said the commission finished taking the couple's statements at 1.30pm today.
"Both of them gave full cooperation to the MACC during the process."
The commission confirmed that it will examine the duo's statements and that the investigation will focus on issues of corruption and abuse of power.
"We are confident that we can complete the investigation papers soon before they are submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers for the next course of action."
The FGV crisis was sparked after the company's board, led by Mohd Isa, moved to suspend FGV chief executive officer Zakaria Arshad and three other executives.
However, Zakaria claimed he had tried to stop "ridiculous investments" advocated by the board totaling hundreds of millions of ringgit.
FGV denied the claim and accused Zakaria of violating corporate governance rules.
The MACC on June 7 questioned Zakaria and followed up with a raid on FGV's office a day later.
Following the crisis, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak intervened by roping in former minister Idris Jala to conduct a fact-finding exercise.
After the conclusion of Idris' report, Mohd Isa resigned as FGV chairperson on Monday.
Najib subsequently appointed Mohd Isa as acting Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) chairperson.
The prime minister also announced that disciplinary action against Zakaria and other FGV executives would proceed and that they would be allowed to defend themselves.
Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia today published a report in which Mohd Isa said his resignation as FGV chairperson was the best move to keep the company from being dragged into politics.
"This was the best solution because FGV has good potential. If less negative statements are made, then it would be better for the company," he said.
