The police have arrested a netizen for allegedly insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Muhammad V, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar today.

"Congratulations to KL Crime Investigation Division for successfully nabbing 'Catt Ginger' who had insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said in a tweet without giving further details.

41-year-old Catterine Chong, who goes by the name "Catt Ginger" on Facebook, has been detained under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 and will be remanded for one more day.

This is according to her lawyer Vince Tan.

“The police wished to have her remanded for four days, but the magistrate granted them a day,” he told a press conference in Setapak today.

He said his client will be released at Dang Wangi Police Station by tomorrow.

The arrest came after the cops were alerted by other netizens over a screenshot of a doctored photograph on social media which went viral during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Several netizens have condemned the act in their blogs.

According to a screenshot published by the bloggers, the Catt Ginger Facebook page allegedly uploaded a photograph of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with a pig snout. 

Malaysiakini cannot verify if the image is authentic as the Catt Ginger Facebook page is no longer accessible. 

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a police report was lodged by the Perak Umno Youth movement and 12 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) against the Facebook user.

The report was made at the Sungai Senam Police Station in Ipoh yesterday. 

Attempts by Malaysiakini to access Catt Ginger's Facebook were unsuccessful.
