Amanah takes CJ issue to court; no re-election, no GE14 for DAP

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Amanah to file judicial review on CJ issue

Parti Amanah Negara will file a judicial review on the extension of Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif's term for three years, a move it argues is unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Bar has urged Justice Md Raus and Court of Appeal President Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin to fulfil their vows to uphold the Federal Constitution by rejecting the re-appointments into their roles, given that their age of more than 66 years and 6 months goes against the Federal Constitution.

No CEC poll, no GE14 for DAP

The DAP will have to kiss its 14th general election goals goodbye if it chooses not to hold a re-election for its central executive committee (CEC), Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said the party is not afraid of holding a re-election, but it does not want to set a precedent where the Registrar of Societies (ROS) can again nullify the party's future leadership election results on "flimsy" grounds.

Centre for A Better Tomorrow (Cenbet) said the timing of the ROS order fuels suspicion of political interference as the ROS action on DAP came four years after the deemed faulty CEC election, and soon after a statement on the matter by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's aide, Tengku Sariffuddin Ahmad.

Other Kinibites

Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim penned a heartfelt commentary decrying the rampantness of corruption in the country.

Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir instructed his lawyers to act against Prime Minister Najib, who he said tried to pressure the court ahead of his defamation suit hearing against Najib's aide Tengku Sariffuddin, by claiming that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to install Mukhriz as the next PM.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said Sarawak's move to send to London to establish facts about the Malaysia Agreement 1963 shows the state does not trust the Attorney-General's Chambers.

As part of the campaign against Mahathir, Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia published a recording of a speech by the country’s first prime minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, made in 1988, lamenting about how Mahathir had betrayed him in an open letter Mahathir penned in the 1960s.

Looking ahead

Anwar will testify in his defamation suit against Utusan Malaysia on the Lahad Datu incursion in 2012.

The Federal Court will hear the challenge by former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and his wife to regain right to their Balinese-style mansion, which was forfeited at the heart of the corruption case that sent Mohd Khir to jail.

The Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC)'s hearing on the custodial death of S Balamurugan will resume for three more days, starting today.
