Anwar links Shafee to judges' tenure; Thaqif died of leptospirosis

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Anwar links Shafee to judges' tenure

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has questioned whether prominent lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah was involved in the extension of the tenures of Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif and Court of Appeal President Justice Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin by three and two years respectively.

Anwar claimed the lawyer, who has publicly defended the government's move on the issue, was involved in formulating the legal justification for the extension, which has been criticised as unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, Parti Amanah Negara, which has filed a judicial review on the extensions, has urged Md Raus to decline the extension.

NGO Lawyers for Liberty called on the judges to uphold the Federal Constitution and reject the tenure extensions of the two senior judges.

Thaqif died of leptospirosis

Tahfiz student Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, 11, died of leptospirosis and not injuries from beatings, according to the post-mortem results released yesterday.

His mother, Felda Wani Ahmad, said the family has rejected the result and is seeking legal advice to secure the boy's medical records and the post-mortem report.

The boy's death in April shocked the nation. Both his legs and his right arm were amputated prior to his death due to severe blood clots, following suspected abuse at the religious school in Johor.

Other Kinibites

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad dares Najib to arrest him following speculation that Mahathir is now co-operating with his former nemesis Anwar Ibrahim, because Mahathir is afraid he might be jailed over the 1980s foreign exchange market (forex) scandal, which will be probed by a Royal Commission of Inquiry.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir sent Najib a legal letter demanding an apology by tomorrow (Wednesday), after Najib claimed Mahathir was trying to oust him to install Mukhriz, his son, as the next PM.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said those in Mahathir's cabinet at the time of the forex scandal cannot be blamed, since the special task force investigating the matter had concluded the cabinet was misled.

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision that PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar did not defame National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC) and its chairperson Mohd Salleh Ismail, and that her remarks were about something happening in her Lembah Pantai constituency where the KL Eco-City project is located.

Former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and his wife Zaharah Kechik dropped their application to seek rights to the Balinese mansion that has been at the heart of the corruption scandal that landed Khir in jail.

Looking ahead

Anwar will testify in his defamation suit against TV3 over its report on the 2012 Lahad Datu incursion today.
