A rapist cannot escape the law by marrying his victim, said the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

The ministry said this was clear in the case where a rapist, who married his 12-year-old victim in 2013, was currently serving time in prison.

It said that child marriage is not encouraged, and children must be allowed to reach their full potential without mental and physical challenges that come with marriage.

"However, the ministry conforms with the victim and her family's decision to continue with the marriage, which is in line with the law," it added in a statement today.

Muslim girls under 16 can get married if they receive the consent of a Syariah court.

The ministry was responding to news reports yesterday where minister Rohani Abdul Karim said that the rape victim, who is 16 now, was in good condition and planning to get a job.

The rapist, Riduan Masmud, had married the girl in 2013 in a bid to escape conviction.

However, the High Court in Kota Kinabalu rejected his appeal against committing statutory rape and sentenced him to prison.

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry said it would continue to keep tabs with the victim, who is currently living with her parents.

The ministry said it would also extend aid to the girl to help her lead a good life.
