PARLIAMENT | The government is seeking to bulldoze amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) and the revised Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act (Amendment) Bill.

It passed a motion not to end today's Dewan Rakyat sitting until debates on both bills are completed.

The two amendment bills are number three and four on the Order Paper, respectively.

The Dewan Rakyat is currently resuming debate on the Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Bill.

The house will then debate the Malaysian Border Security Agency Bill before finally discussing the Poca amendment bill.

Among the proposed revisions to Poca are that detainees would no longer be brought to an inquiry officer after the remand process.

Instead, the police are supposed to submit an investigation report to the inquiry officer and the Prevention of Crime Board, upon which the inquiry officer would start the inquiry process.

Meanwhile, the LRA amendments are to compel non-Muslim couples, separated after one partner converted to Islam, to go through divorce proceedings in the civil court.

However, a provision under the LRA, which would have banned the unilateral conversion of children by one parent, has been removed from the amendment bill.
