PARLIAMENT | The Barisan Nasional government has been slammed for "lying" to the people about providing affordable housing.

In claiming as such, PKR lawmaker Sim Tze Tzin cited a written parliamentary reply by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim who confirmed that only 8,475 1Malaysia Peoples’ Housing (PR1MA) units have been completed since PR1MA's inception in 2013.

Sim pointed out that the BN had, in its manifesto during the last general election, proposed to build 1,000,000 affordable houses including 500,000 PR1MA units.

"But the answer I received was shocking," the Bayan Baru MP said in a press conference in Parliament today.

From the 8,475 completed units, only 934 keys have been handed over to their respective owners, said Sim citing the written reply further.

"The government did not do anything, they failed their job. (They) couldn't deliver what they have promised, this is BN," he added.

This also means that the 8,475 units are less than two percent of the 500,000 promised PR1MA homes.

Meanwhile, Shahidan in the written reply said that out of the 8,475 completed units, 3,096 were built in Kedah, 560 in Putrajaya, 2,074 in Kuala Lumpur, 676 in Johor and 2,069 in Perak.

He also confirmed that PR1MA's board of directors have approved the construction of 254,747 units.

"136,685 units are currently being built throughout the country," he added.
