While Pakatan Harapan in Selangor is putting up a united front, including on ties PAS, the situation in Kelantan appears to be the exact opposite.

Rifts in Kelantan PKR over its relationship with PAS are now affecting the party's relationship with Harapan, with Amanah especially at odds with PKR in the state.

It is a situation that has not escaped the attention of Kota Bharu PKR election director Ahmad Syauqey Abdul Ghani.

"I found out that leaders from our allies in Harapan are not comfortable (with our relationship with PAS).

"There is talk that they will block certain PKR leaders from attending state-level Harapan meeting," Ahmad Syauqey told Malaysiakini when met in Kota Bharu.

The rift in Kelantan PKR began when PAS severed ties with the party in May.

In response, the PKR central leadership ordered Kelantan PKR members to quit their appointed positions in the state government.

However, this order was not followed through, causing a divide between those who wanted to continue working with PAS and those against it.

There have been calls from within the party for Kelantan PKR chief Ab Aziz Ab Kadir to quit, but he has resisted such efforts.

Tensions reached new heights when Kelantan Amanah demanded that its PKR counterpart state its position on PAS.

However, this was met with a coy reply from Kelantan PKR communications director Mohd Sukirman Mustafa, who said they would follow Anwar Ibrahim's stand on the matter.

"Anwar is not only the PKR de facto leader but also Harapan's de facto leader.

"So, as PKR members, we will obey our leader," Sukirman was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia today.

Anwar had, in a letter sent from prison last Saturday, said he had encouraged PKR to maintain ties with PAS, for as long as the Islamist party maintained an open line of communications.

'Relationship will go back to normal'

However, Sukirman believes that despite Kelantan PKR’s differing opinions with Amanah, their relationship will go back to normal soon

While Ab Aziz and his faction are not budging at the moment, over in the PKR Youth wing, a shake-up has already occurred.

Exercising his executive powers, PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi had sacked Mohd Hafidz Rezal Amran as Kelantan Youth chief, replacing him with Mohd Khairul Amin Abd Rahman.

However, Ab Aziz does not recognise Mohd Khairul's ascension, and instead appointed Mohd Hafidz as Kelantan PKR Youth "coordinator".

Nik Nazmi has brushed off this move, saying it does not mean there are two Kelantan PKR Youth chiefs.

"We accept that the appointment (of Mohd Hafiz) made (by Ab Aziz) was not as PKR Youth chief, but as coordinator," he told reporters when met in Kota Bharu today.

Harapan's leadership council had declared on Aug 29 that it would not work with PAS in the 14th general election, but there still are calls from within PKR for the talks between Harapan and PAS to continue.
