Jamal arrested after beer stunt; debate dare gets personal

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Jamal arrested after beer stunt

Sungai Besar Umno leader Umno leader Jamal Yunos and seven others were arrested and remanded for three days over their beer-bottles bashing stunt outside the Selangor state secretariat building yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Umno's acting Deputy President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Jamal's (photo) act was not sanctioned by the party.

Meanwhile, the fate of the German F&B festival in Klang remains in limbo, with Selangor exco Teng Chang Khim saying it is now up to the relevant council to decide on its fate

Malaysiakini also spoke to several Klang Municipal Council (MPK) councillors, who said the event most likely, would be spiked, in light of the police's objection to the event.

On another matter, realising the lack of traction for the Anti-Kleptocracy rally slated for Oct 14, the organisers are now saying they will intensify efforts to attract participation.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has asked voters to vote for its candidates, and in places they are not contesting, for Pakatan Harapan candidates.

PSM lawmaker Michael Jeyakumar said the party is fielding candidates to contest in GE14 to change the type of politics and leadership in the country.

Debate dare gets personal

BN strategic communications deputy director Eric See-to (photo) 'reminded' DAP MP Tony Pua of a loan of RM100k he allegedly gave the latter over 12 years ago.

This was after the Petaling Jaya Utara MP turned down a debate offer from See-to, who he said was a "nobody", and said he would only debate minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

Earlier, See-to had accepted Pandan MP and PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli's challenge to debate on tax collections provided Rafizi got Pua to debate See-to on the Penang undersea tunnel issue.

Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid defended the school competition which saw Umno flags flown and songs being sung by students, was not "political nor unusual".

Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, in an obvious jab to the Umno event, said DAP does not need to do any convincing, as it is attractive enough for people to join it.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, meanwhile, refused to be drawn into the debate on the event, asking questions on the issue to be directed to Umno secretary-general and Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (photo).

On another matter, Zahid also said there were no political elements involved in the MACC arrest of Parti Warisan Sabah vice president Peter Anthony, in relation to alleged graft.

Peter was remanded five days by the MACC today.

Parti Warisan Sabah president Mohd Shafie Apdal said his vice-president is innocent until proven guilty and said the party will let law take its course.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ministry has handed over several files to the MACC to facilitate a probe into the case.
