Claims on social media that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak often jinxed the Manchester United football club have not escaped his attention.

Taking to Twitter, Najib pointed out that proponents of this claim had been proven wrong after Manchester United defeated Arsenal in an English Premier League game.

"(They) won right? There are those who always say when I tweet, Manchester United would lose.

"I read them, don't think I don't. #GGMU," he said in a Twitter posting.

Najib had tweeted about the match against Arsenal before it was played, which elicited various reactions, including some joking that Manchester United would lose as a result of the prime minister’s tweet.

"I support MU (Manchester United) too but whenever the PM tweets about MU, disaster will strike MU," said a Twitter user using the handle @akidin.

Another twitter user with the handle @HalimssShahrin said: When DS (Datuk Seri) tweets about MU's football, surely there will be something wrong."

Manchester United eventually beat Arsenal 3-1.

Najib, a fan of Manchester United, regularly tweets in support of the football club ahead of a game.

The club remain five points behind neighbours Manchester City in the league standings.
