Police today recorded former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's statement at his office at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya.

At around 1.30pm, six police officers in two cars arrived at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya and entered the building.

Mahathir's lawyer Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla confirmed hat Mahathir was questioned for his "Bugis Pirate" remark.

He said police asked a total of 32 questions to Mahathir which took 45 minutes to finish.

Yesterday, inspector-general of police Mohd Fuzi Harun said the former premier's statement would be recorded in relation to his remark at a gathering in Petaling Jaya on Oct 14.

In his speech at the “anti-kleptocracy rally”, Mahathir had mocked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak by comparing him to “Bugis pirates”.

This courted the wrath of two sultans of Bugis descent, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

The Bugis community was also up in arms, with the Bugis Youth Assembly of Macassar Indonesia (PPBMI) and Indonesia vice-president Jusuf Kalla demanding an apology from Mahathir.

Mahathir, however, defended his remarks, saying it was only targetted at Najib and not the entire community.
