Insulting Agong on Facebook – houseman claims trial

A houseman was charged at the Sessions Court today with insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V on Facebook two years ago.

Mohd Faiz Mohd Yusop, 29, from Shah Alam, however, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar.

He was alleged to have initiated the transmission of the insulting remark against the King on his Facebook page at 6 pm, on Dec 16, 2016.

The remark was read at a restaurant in Taman Kota Pendamar, Port Klang, at 10.45 pm the same day.

The charge, under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or jail term of one year, or both, if convicted.

The court allowed Mohd Faiz bail of RM7,000 with one surety and set March 15 for re-mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Yahya prosecuted, while Mohd Faiz was represented by counsel Mohd Kamarul Arifin Mohd Wafa. - Bernama
