End of an era for Umno veterans; Dr M confident of victory; rumblings in Johor

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

End of an era for Umno veterans

Umno sacked party veterans Daim Zainuddin and Rafidah Aziz for campaigning for Pakatan Harapan, while Rais Yatim was placed under investigation for sympathetic comments about the opposition.

Rafidah scoffed at the sacking, stating that she was not a member of a kleptocratic organisation.

Rais also brushed off the action against him, calling Umno a " non-entity".

Following this, Rais is also expected to campaign for Harapan in Jempol.

Umno vice president Hishammuddin Hussein said the action against the party veterans were justified.

Daim continued to campaign for Harapan, appearing in Ayer Hitam for DAP's candidate Liew Chin Tong.

Dr M confident of victory

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he was confident of winning the 14th general election, but was concern about the possibility that caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak may not want to hand over power peacefully.

Mahathir was unapologetic about his past actions when he was prime minister and claimed people wanted to see him "crawl and humiliate" him.

After campaigning across the country, Mahathir returned to Kedah amid concerns that PAS was gaining more ground than Harapan.

Najib was also in Kedah, announcing various development initiatives for Langkawi, where Mahathir is contesting.

Rumblings in Johor

Voters in Pagoh are torn between Bersatu's Muhyiddin and Umno's Ismail Mohamed, but Najib's unpopularity there could be a tie-breaker.

To the south of Johor, a convergence of factors is seeing Bersatu's Dr Md Farid Md Rafik pose the strongest challenge yet against BN's hold on the parliamentary seat of Tanjung Piai.

The latest edition of Calonkini features Abdul Hannaan Khairy, Harapan's youngest candidate.

Chef Wan made an appearance at Harapan's event in Penang but denied endorsing the opposition coalition.

Najib claimed the large turnout at Harapan rallies were bussed in.

Meanwhile, TV3 claimed photographs of the crowd were doctored.

Other Kini bites

Caretaker deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi promises Sungai Petani RM25 million in allocation after BN wins the general election.

Zahid also says that Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil will be appointed a minister if BN wins a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

The Election Commission refused to act on alleged vote-buying, asking complainants to take the matter up with the MACC.

Questions were raised in the syariah legal fraternity over syariah judges being used to help campaign for Jamil Khir Baharom in Jerai for the 14th general election.

Looking ahead

Campaigning for the 14th general election enters the ninth day.

Mahathir will make an appearance in the parliamentary constituency of Batu.
